“We are very proud of our year as the 2019 European Capital of Smart Tourism”, says Jenny Taipale, Head of Partnerships and Networks at Helsinki Marketing. “It has been a great opportunity for Helsinki to become even more widely known as a smart tourism destination, to connect to other EU cities and learn from each other and also to spread the word about the benefits of innovative tourism measures. We will continue to do so on every occasion, as we truly believe smart tourism can help us all to find solutions on global challenges.”
“This award has meant a lot for Lyon”, explain the Marketing Director Camille Lenoble and Promotion Director Blandine Thenet of ONLYLYON Tourism. “It has been both a reward of our existing initiatives, an encouragement to go further and a huge responsibility. A responsibility to gather around us the locals, the visitors and the stakeholders, to continue to be an example and to keep on innovating, so that Lyon will be even smarter tomorrow.”
LYON
From 5 to 8 of December 2019, Lyon’s famous Festival of Lights (“Fête des Lumières”) took place all around the city. Grand visual and interactive shows were put on throughout the festival days and major sights of Lyon had organised lightshows. Locals participated too and placed small candles on their balconies and outside their windows.
The 2019 European Capital of Smart Tourism, Lyon made sure to be environmentally conscious and sustainable during the Festival of Lights. For example, the festival uses only 0.1% of the annual energy consumption of the city’s urban lighting, mainly thanks to the use of LED lights. Furthermore, digital communication is favoured over printed programmes and artists who take the environment dimension into account are being rewarded with the Récylum Trophy for Sustainable Lighting. Find out more about the Fête des Lumières here.
